Paul Dummett has revealed injuries played a significant part in his decision to snub Wales. The Newcastle United defender has put in some strong showings in the Premier League, putting in a Man of the Match performance. The community who love their favorite team can book Wales Euro Cup Tickets.
Ryan Giggs was hoping to capitalize on that strong early form by including Dummett in his squad for the crucial Euro Cup 2020 qualifiers. These qualifiers are with Azerbaijan and Belarus. He claimed the player had opted not to be involved in order to focus on his club career.
“I spoke to Paul and he really wanted to concentrate on club football,” said Giggs.
He felt that he’s had a lot of hamstring problems so he just felt he wanted to make sure he was fit for Newcastle. That was it really. Dummett has won five caps for the national side. He wants to focus on his club career in a bid to gain a new contract at Newcastle.
“I’ve got center-halves who are playing, and I was considering him for that center-half position, but it’s not a problem.”
“It was obviously a difficult decision because playing for your country is an honor,” he told the Chronicle.
But I have had my fair share of injuries over time. I just felt that coming at this time of my career. I want to play for Newcastle and earn a new contract here.
“My main focus is to be fit playing for Newcastle and stay here for the rest of my career.”
And when asked if his international career is now over, Dummett said I don’t know. We will have to see what happens in the future. I have to see with the age I am at and the stage of my career. It made sense for now. I want to be fit and playing well for Newcastle. that is my main priority.
“Being here and playing well for Newcastle will only help my situation and help me play longer.”
Dummett made his Wales debut against Holland in June 2014. He went on to make himself unavailable for the national team. He is being disappointed at the lack of action he was given under Chris Coleman. It’s that lack of action, as well as his axing from the Euro 2016 squad.
It is believed to have dampened Dummett’s enthusiasm for pulling the red shirt on. Boyhood club Newcastle overtaking his country as his most pressing priority. And having turned down the chance to be in the Wales set-up for a second time. Many believe it is now the end of Dummett’s international career.
Sources close to the player insist he hasn’t yet closed the door on international football. Dummett and Giggs are believed to still be on good terms. Wales boss could well be open to recalling the player should he prove his commitment to the cause.
