England’s greatest ever XI including Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Bobby Moore

England will bring up the significant landmark of their 1000th international match on Thursday evening when they welcome Montenegro to Wembley.

Gareth Southgate’s side needs just one point from their two remaining qualifiers to guarantee their place at Euro 2020 and will be huge favourites to pick up a sixth win from seven games in Group A. To enjoy most exciting matches, grab your England Euro Cup Tickets.

The contest will also provide an opportunity to celebrate the rich 147-year history of the England men’s team, from their first-ever match against Scotland in 1872, through their 1966 World Cup win and right up to the modern-day.

The Three Lions have won 568 and lost 189 of their previous 999 outings, scoring 2,188 goals in the process.

Over the years 19 different managers have called upon 1,244 different players, and here Sports Mole takes on the near-impossible task of slimming that down to their best-ever XI.

Goalkeeper: Gordon Banks

England’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper and one of the greatest to ever don a pair of gloves, Gordon Banks is perhaps best remembered not for his role in the Three Lions’ crowning glory, but rather pulling off a save many deem to be the best of all-time four years later.

Banks produced a scarcely-believable stop to deny Brazil’s Pele at the 1970 World Cup, flicking the powerful downward header up and over the crossbar when it looked like a certain goal.

It was one of many highlights in an international career that spanned 73 caps over nine years from 1963 to 1972, with England’s all-time record appearance holder Peter Shilton having to play second fiddle to his former Leicester City and England teammate. Fans from all over the world can buy Euro Cup Final Tickets online.

Right-back: Phil Neal

A position blessed with a glut of consistent performers rather than standout superstars, former Liverpool stalwart Phil Neal is our right-back despite featuring in an England team which regularly underperformed.

Neal only appeared at two major tournaments for his country – the 1980 European Championship and 1982 World Cup – and had a relatively short international career of seven years. However, during that time he won 50 caps and scored five goals in addition to racking up trophy after trophy with Liverpool.

Neal ended his club career with 23 pieces of silverware, including eight top-flight titles and four European Cups.

Center-backs: Bobby Moore, Billy Wright

No all-time England XI would be complete without the golden boy of English football Bobby Moore, who remains the nation’s only World Cup-winning captain having led the Three Lions to glory in 1966. Described by Pele as the best defender he ever faced, Moore’s impeccable timing and reading of the game ensured that he made facing some of the greatest ever attackers look easy.

The West Ham United legend was made England captain at just 22 – the youngest to be handed the armband – and went on to lead his country in 90 of his 108 appearances, the latter of which was a national record at the time of his retirement. For live action, you can buy Euro Cup Semi Finals Tickets online.

The only man who can match Moore’s tally of 90 games as England captain is Billy Wright, who was also the most-capped player for the national team at the time of his retirement. Indeed, the Wolverhampton Wanderers stalwart was the first player in international football history to earn a century of caps, going on to reach 105 before retiring in 1959.

Left-back: Ashley Cole

Arguably the only England player who consistently replicated his club form for England during the ‘Golden Generation’, Ashley Cole was widely regarded as one of the world’s best full-backs throughout his 13-year international career.

Cole went on to win 107 caps for his country, leaving him as England’s highest-capped full-back and sixth on the all-time list. As well as appearing at five major tournaments for the Three Lions, Cole also won three Premier League titles, a record seven FA Cups and the Champions League during his club career.

Right-midfield: Stanley Matthews

The first real superstar of English football and the measuring stick for wingers for decades, Sir Stanley Matthews boasts a plethora of historic achievements in football – the first player to be knighted while still playing, the first winner of the Ballon d’Or and the FWA Footballer of the Year awards and England’s oldest ever player.

Nicknamed ‘The Wizard of the Dribble’, Matthews’s international career spanned 23 years, although the Second World War limited him to 54 caps. The winger made up for his lost time, though, last appearing for England at the age of 42 and going on to play in the top flight until he was 50. The community who love their favorite team they are booking Euro Cup Quarter Finals Tickets .

Center-midfield: Sir Bobby Charlton, Steven Gerrard

In a hugely competitive area of the team, one sure-fire pick was Sir Bobby Charlton. While Bobby Moore was the talisman behind England’s 1966 World Cup win, Charlton was the driving force and most memorably scored twice in the semi-final to down Eusebio’s Portugal. The final itself saw him play a more reserved but equally important role to limit the influence of a young Franz Beckenbauer.

Charlton ended his England career with 106 caps and 49 goals to his name – both records at the time of his retirement – and his performances in 1966 saw him win the Ballon d’Or as well as a host of other individual awards that year. At club level he made 758 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 249 goals.

Only five outfield players have played more for England than Bobby Charlton, and one of them partners him in central midfield. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard hung up his boots after the 2014 World Cup having made 114 appearances for his country, including being part of six major tournaments.

While his international career was often criticized for an apparent struggle to play alongside Frank Lampard or a failure to emulate his Liverpool heroics for England, Gerrard was still one of his country’s most consistent and high-quality performers throughout the ultimately underwhelming Golden Generation.

Left-midfield: Sir Tom Finney

Perhaps the greatest compliment that can be paid to Sir Tom Finney is that there were many who could not choose between him and Sir Stanley Matthews when both were in their pomp. Finney perhaps did not get the same overall level of recognition as his fellow world-class contemporary, but those within the game were in no doubt as to his quality and Matthews himself compared him to the likes of Pele, Diego Maradona, George Best, and Alfredo Di Stefano.

England's greatest ever XI - Sir Tom Finney
England’s greatest ever XI – Sir Tom Finney

The winger’s loyalty to hometown club Preston North End was unflinching, spending his entire career with the unfashionable outfit despite numerous offers from elsewhere. At the international level, he made 76 appearances, scoring 30 goals – a record at the time – thanks largely to his ability to play on either wing or as a centre-forward.

Center-forwards: Wayne Rooney, Gary Lineker

There are many who feel Wayne Rooney did not fulfill his potential with England after bursting onto the scene as a breath of fresh air at Euro 2004, but his stats stand up against anyone. The former captain is the most-capped outfield player with 120 appearances, and surpassed Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record before ending on 53 – the only player to break the half-century mark for the Three Lions.

Voted England’s player of the year four times – twice as many as anyone else since the award was introduced in 2003 – Rooney also broke records at club level with Manchester United, where he scored an unparalleled 253 goals in addition to winning 16 trophies.

England's greatest ever XI - Wayne Rooney
England’s greatest ever XI – Wayne Rooney

Rooney could famously score all types of goal, but England have also been blessed with a number of football’s great poachers throughout the years, and Gary Lineker narrowly edges Jimmy Greaves to the second center-forward role in this team. Lineker agonizingly ended his international career on 48 goals – one short of the then-record held by Bobby Charlton – from just 80 caps.

An unrivaled 10 of those goals came at World Cups, including six at the 1986 tournament as he became the first English player to win the Golden Boot. Four more followed as England reached the semi-finals in 1990, falling just short of a first final since 1966 against West Germany in Italy.

Euro 2020: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Callum Hudson-Odoi return but Jack Grealish overlooked again

Jack Grealish continues to be overlooked for an England call-up by Gareth Southgate, who has recalled Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Callum Hudson-Odoi to his squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase England Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

The Three Lions take on Montenegro and Kosovo later this month, with a draw against the former a week today confirming England’s qualification for next summer’s tournament.

Oxlade-Chamberlain and Hudson-Odoi are both back in the 27-man squad selected for the two fixtures, the first of which is the 1000th men’s international to be played by England.

James Maddison returns to the squad as he awaits his Three Lions debut, despite being criticized for visiting a casino after pulling out of England duty during the previous international break.

He is one of two uncapped players in the squad alongside Chelsea center-half Fikayo Timori, who received his first call-up last time out by failed to get on the pitch against the Czech Republic or Bulgaria.

John Stones, like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Hudson-Odoi, has been recalled, but fellow defender Michael Keane has been dropped by Southgate amid a tough season for the Everton man.

There is also still no place for Kyle Walker and Dele Alli, while Mason Mount does earn a call-up despite appearing to suffer an injury during Chelsea’s Champions League draw with Ajax on Tuesday.

“We’ve been very pleased with the form of Kieran and Trent. Trent’s form for Liverpool has been really exceptional. It’s an area of the pitch where we’ve got high competition for places.”

On Grealish’s absence, Southgate added: He’s a very good player – I’ve watched him closely this season. The reality of that is he’s up against Sterling, Rashford, Hudson-Odoi, and Sancho in those wide areas.

The competition in that area is the high level they’re all good players, Jack’s a very good player. I worked with him in the under-21s so I know all about him.

“He’s very close and he just has to keep playing the way he is. If we had issues over the weekend, I wouldn’t hesitate to call him into the squad.”

England vs Montenegro: Euro 2020 qualifier prediction, tickets, squad

England can celebrate qualification for Euro 2020 if they get a result against Montenegro at Wembley Stadium on Thursday evening. Gareth Southgate’s side is three points clear at the top of Group A, and need just one point from their two remaining games to seal their place at next summer’s European Championships.

The Three Lions’ last outing saw them thrash Bulgaria 6-0 in Sofia, though the match was marred by disgraceful racist chanting from Bulgarian fans. Football fans can book England Euro Cup Tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

Southgate’s side acquitted themselves well in the face of awful abuse and will look to move on from those awful scenes as they take on Montenegro in front of a buoyant Wembley crowd with a qualification in sight.

England 4-0 Montenegro

Having eased to a 5-1 win in Montenegro back in March, England should see out another comfortable victory at Wembley. If the Three Lions get an early goal, it should be a rout.

Team news

James Maddison has been handed another England chance despite his controversial casino visit during the last international break. Maddison pulled out of the team to face the Czech State and Bulgaria last month because of sickness.

But the uncapped 22-year-old was pictured in a casino during the 2-1 overthrow in Prague. John Stones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have also been handed England reminiscences. Everton defender Michael Keane has been released and there is still no place for Dele Alli.

Stamford Bridge team-mate Mason Mount is also included in spite of coming off in Tuesday’s 4-4 Champions League draw against Ajax with an ankle problem. England manager Southgate insists Kyle Walker’s international career is not over despite ignoring him for a third-successive squad.

As well as Walker, there was no place for Aston Villa’s in-form captain Jack Grealish or Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard. Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson was a late call-up in place of injured Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley is also ruled out, but will not be replaced.

Head to head (H2H) results in the history

The Three Lions do not boast a glittering record against Montenegro, having drawn three of their five meetings. England drew both Euro 2012 qualifiers home (0-0) and away (2-2), the following World Cup qualifier (1-1) away before winning the reverse fixture 4-1 at Wembley in 2013.

Southgate also led England to a 5-1 away win back in March, with goals from Michael Keane, Ross Barkley (2), Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling sealing a routine Euro 2020 qualifying victory.

Euro 2020 qualifiers – Maddison, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Tomori make youthful England squad

James Maddison, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Fikayo Tomori have been named in a youthful England squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers with Montenegro and Kosovo. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase England Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

Boss Gareth Southgate has released his 27-man squad for the double-header later this month, with Tyrone Mings, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, and Harry Winks retaining their places.

Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, and Jesse Lingard have failed to recapture their spots in the Three Lions’ squad, while Michael Keane loses his place after a tough international break in October.

Meanwhile, in-form Jack Grealish can count himself unlucky to miss out on a spot in the team and may have been hampered by his calf injury. On Grealish, Southgate revealed: “He’s a very good player. I’ve watched him closely this season.

The reality of that is that he’s up against Sterling, Rashford, Hudson-Odoi, Sancho in those wide areas. The competition in that area is a really high level.

“I think Jack’s a very good player. He’s very close. He’s just got to keep playing the way he is, and if we had issues over the weekend, I wouldn’t hesitate to call him into the squad.”

Explaining the unusually large squad size, Southgate said: “The squad is a little bit larger size than normal.

“There are one or two injury doubts. Hopefully, we get through the next few days without any problems.”

Southgate went on to say he’s recalled Oxlade-Chamberlain as he has a real belief in him while praising Hudson-Odoi’s dedication and motivation to come back from injury.

Walker’s absence was also purely down to the incredible form of Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to the England boss.

Maddison and Tomori are then only uncapped players in the squad – with both somewhat unfortunate to miss out on their first games for the senior team against Bulgaria and Czech Republic last month.

England plays against Montenegro on 14 November and after that plays in Kosovo three days later. Gareth Southgate’s side is top of Group A and needs one more point to secure their place at Euro Cup 2020. Southgate thought he named a larger than normal 27-man squad on Thursday because there was a join of injury fears.

Attacking midfielder Ross Barkley has missed Chelsea’s last six games, with his most recent presence having come in a 1-0 win against Newcastle United on 19 October.

Euro 2020 gives Adidas a boost after Kanye West shoe slip

Adidas expects sales of new football products to increase ahead of the Euro Cup 2020 after quarterly growth was held back by weaker performance of Kanye West’s Yeezy shoes. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase Euro Cup Hospitality tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

Revenues for the third quarter rose 6 percent to 6.41 billion euros, compared to 6.32 billion euros on average, but shoe sales increased by only 1 percent compared to the launch Yeezy major last year.

This also limited the growth of e-commerce to 37%, compared to 37% in the second quarter, as many Yeezy shoes were sold online.

Adidas has decided to limit supplies of Yeezy products this year in order to maintain its exclusivity, Kasper Rorsted. Adidas shares, which rose by more than one-third in the past year, had lost only 0.9% at closing in Germany.

Adidas has wrinkled Nike’s dominance of the US market in recent years, thanks to partnerships with celebrities such as Kanye West. Nike has grown faster in China and Europe, a trend that has been maintained in recent years results.

Missed expectations

For the quarter ended August 31, Nike recorded a 10% increase in sales, whose sales were neutral in foreign currency, with a 27% increase in China, but a 4% growth in North America that did not comply with expectations.

Adidas’ sales growth slowed to 11% in China between July and September, compared with 14% in the second quarter. It accelerated in North America to 10% as the company solved its supply chain problems that had slowed growth earlier in the year.

However, the increase in air freight costs to ship products to North America and counter the difficulties encountered in meeting the demand for middle-market clothing weighed on profitability, with the quarterly operating profit remaining at 897 million euros.

Supply chain issues are expected to have minimal impact in the fourth quarter, said Rorsted. He expects a significant acceleration in the period during which Adidas will launch its first produced as part of a partnership with singer Beyonce.

The fourth quarter will benefit from product support for the European Football Championships, such as the Official Balloon Replica, as well as the Chinese New Year and the opening of a new flagship store in London, where sales have been boosted have been encouraging.

“We are very confident about how the last two months of the year will unfold,” Rorsted said.

He confirmed that he expected a net profit of 1.88 to 1.95 billion euros from continuing operations in 2019. He now forecasts growth in foreign currency sales of around 6.5%, the midpoint of the expected range of 5 to 8%.

There is a relief for James Maddison who has been selected by Southgate despite the manager being concerned at the Leicester City midfielder being photographed at a casino the day after he withdrew from the last England squad through illness.

As expected Stones is selected having returned to the Manchester City team of late with Michael Keane missing out. The central defender played poorly in England’s 2-1 defeat away to the Czech Republic and has also recently lost his place at Everton.

Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori and Villa’s Tyrone Mings keen their places as does Ross Barkley which will come as a relief to the midfielder who has not started any of Chelsea’s last five matches.

Despite an apparent return to form there is no place for Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli in the 27-man squad with Southgate also resisting the temptation to include Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Euro 2020 – England planning big celebrations for 1,000th men’s international

England’s former captains, World Cup winners, and most capped players have been invited to the country’s 1,000th men’s international against Montenegro. Sports fanatics can book England Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

November’s Euro 2020 qualifier at Wembley will see the Three Lions become the first country to clock up 1,000 senior men’s internationals, 147 years since the first against Scotland.

England is marking the occasion in a number of ways, including recognizing the notable contributions of former internationals while the current crop will wear individual ‘legacy numbers’ on their shirts.

Southgate, who represented his country fifty-seven (57) times and has the legacy number 1,071, believes the November 14 qualifier will be an occasion to remember.

“It encapsulates the history and the importance of the team going back right the way through,” the Three Lions boss said.

We talk to the players about the badge on the front of the shirt and how we are a small part of that history. It’s important we respect the shirt and leave it in a better place than when we found it if you like.

“So, to be involved in this game is a particularly poignant moment, especially given that some of our great former players will be at the match as well.”

England’s 1966 World Cup winners have been invited to the Montenegro match, as have all former captains and players to have reached 50 caps. Viv Anderson, recognized as the first black professional footballer to represent England at senior level, will also be at the qualifier in recognition of his own notable role in the national team’s history.

Football Association chairman Greg Clarke will present those in attendance with their own unique legacy number memento, while UEFA has granted a special dispensation allowing the current players to have their numbers on display under the crest for the 1,000th game.

Southgate, who was presented with his own legacy number on a visit to an exhibition celebrating England’s past at the National Football Museum in Manchester, said: “We didn’t have that when I was playing, and I used to look at the cricket team with the number on the shirt.

Again, it just makes you very proud that you see how few people have actually managed to achieve that and of course, we always want to win and win trophies with England, but also it’s about individual achievement.

Euro 2020 qualifiers - England planning big celebrations for 1,000th men's international
Euro 2020 qualifiers – England planning big celebrations for 1,000th men’s international

To become an England international is such a difficult and long journey for every player and for their families, for what it means to their family, their community, the school they went to, the boys’ or youth club, Sunday team they played for.

“So, it is important sometimes to just take a step back and remember what that’s about.”

The legacy number will become a reference point long beyond the 1,000th game, but the digits will be moved into the inside of each collar after playing Montenegro – an occasion that offers the chance to wrap up Euro 2020 qualification.

“We’ve got to get the balance right for the team of enjoying this occasion and the build-up to a special game, but equally our job on the night is to qualify for a European Championship,” Southgate said.

That can lead to some more brilliant nights like we’ve had the chance to walk around and remind ourselves of today.

Eddie Howe – Recognition of England is not limited to Steve Cook on current form

Eddie Howe believes that Bournemouth defenseman Steve Cook is under the radar of England coach Gareth Southgate and has every chance of gaining international recognition based on his current form.

The 28-year-old has been in the first division of this quarter and played a pivotal role in Bournemouth by recording three successive white sheets.

Southgate will this week nominate its team for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Montenegro and the manager of Kosovo and Cherries, Howe, believing that Cook can force himself into the race for the national teams.

“I would never say it goes beyond that,” Howe said of Cook’s chances in England.

I think maybe two years ago I felt like he was playing very well and it would be a definite option for England, and it never happened to him.

But if he continues to play like that, then I think he’ll have every chance to do it, I’m sure they (the coaching staff in England) know about him, that’s certain.

“They’ll know about everyone.” Gareth spares no effort, all he has to do is continue to do his best for us.

Cook joined Bournemouth, initially on loan, in Brighton in 2011 and helped the South Coast club come out of Ligue 1 to establish themselves at the top of the league table in their 293 league games.

He set the example on Saturday, including producing a superb final tack to stop United striker Marcus Rashford from equalizing, while Joshua King’s goal helped Bournemouth win his first league victory in five league games.

Howe believes that Nathan Ake’s strong, centrally-driven pair of international defenders, Cook and Dutch, are among the best partnerships formed during his stay at the Vitality Stadium.

“They are really up to the job and they complement each other really well,” Howe said.

You have Cookie, which is a very aggressive plane that likes to defend, very good on the centers, and Nathan reads the game so well and he has that coolness on him that you notice instantly.

“We still have not seen him train with us until he gets to that point there is still some way to go.”
