Russia has confirmed that it will play in its old kit with its next qualifying matches for Euro 2020 Group I, as its new strip reverses the country’s flag. Adidas unveiled the new kit last week, with the predominantly red and blue over white on the sleeves of the shirt.

However, it has since been pointed out that this was the reverse of the country’s white, blue and red tricolor colors. Fans complained that the colors on the new shirt resemble the Serbian flag.

But while the colors are in the right order on the German jersey, the Russian jerseys arrange the colors in the reverse order of the national white, blue and red when players have their arms on the sides.

The company described the jersey as “reintroducing the strong and bold colors of the nation’s flag”, while team director Stanislav Cherchesov said he was presenting an “interesting race solution”.

“When the fans support the team by clapping their arms in the air, you will see the Russian flag on the sleeves,” he said.

The new jerseys were already on sale at the official Adidas stores. However, the social media posts indicate that the team is now training in Sochi with its old kit designed for the 2018 World Cup.

“In the next matches, the Russian national team will continue to use the kit in which it entered the qualifying round,” the Russian Football Federation said.

Russian boss Stanislav Cherchesov initially tried to defend the new kit. He said: When the fans support the team by clapping their arms in the air, you will see the Russian flag on the sleeves.

Russia, second in Group I, will face Belgium at home on Saturday in St. Petersburg and play against San Marino on 19 November.
